Many of you already know that there was a huge earthquake in Indonesia today. The Tsunami has caused massave damage across several countries. Most of these areas have villages situated along the cost and a tidal wave completely destroys most of the towns.
I made it back safely and without too much trouble. One of the huge stories is that I made it through security without having to do the crazy hard search like usual. I guess that was because I was only wearing three pieces of clothing and had nothing in my pocket. That made sure that I didn't get stopped.
I leave in about 8 more hours. I should probably get some sleep. Here is my itinerary.
Dec 18 at 2:50 PM to 8:35 PM Jakarta to Hong Kong
Dec 18 at 11:35 PM to 7:55 PM Hong Kong to Los Angeles
Dec 19 at 12:35 AM to 5:19 AM Los Angeles to Dallas
Notice on the second leg of the trip I arrive before I depart. That is where I fly backwards in time! Pretty cool. I think Einstein was on to something.
I don't know how often I will be posting between now and Jan 10th so don't expect much.
In two days I will get on the plane for America! I've got plenty to do before then but I got my christmas shopping done today. This last week or two has been pretty hectic. Between making all the purchases before the end of the year and settling contract disputes caused by Agus and his departure it has been very exhausting but has been a learning experience. I am now a lot less trusting when it comes to business and money and I have learned how easy it is to rip people off. The new guy, Ray, is working out very well. He is smart, knows computers and is a hard worker.
Christmas is almost here and I am beginning to notice. Today is the Elementary Christmas Program which is where all the little people dress up in bathrobes and do their thing. I made a movie of Luke 1:26-35; 38 using some of the students for the drama class. I really like movie making. Tomorrow night is the staff Christmas party which is what I am making lefse for.
Last night I was making lefse, a traditional Norwegian Christmas food (my family is of Norwegian decent). In the process of making it you have to get your hands pretty full of mashed potatos. In order to clean it off I tried to turn the sink on with my arm, since my hands were soo full of potatos. I accidently broke off the faucet. Luckily a quick switch turned off the water pump and stopped the flood but then we can't take showers and do all the other things you do with water.
I have hired a guy named Ray to be a computer service technician. He is about 42, married and knows his computers. Yesterday was his first day and the internet computer broke the night before. We spent the whole day rebuilding the computer which also didn't work so we started over from a computer out of the science lab and then finally it worked. We also made some major changes that should hopefully make our network more robust, faster and more secure. I hope he will be a great addition to our school.
My plane ticket has been issued and I am confirmed on the whole thing. I will be flying Cathay Pacific which is in the top 3 airlines in the world. I will be arriving in Dallas at 5:20 AM on Sunday the 19th of December. Plenty of time for church!
Rainy season has definitely been going recently. We had about 3 weeks straight of rain but the last three days have been rain free. On the positive side, the number of mosquitoes have definitely gone down in the last month. Not like before when there were hundreds in our house.
I'm giving up on my travel agent that I have been trying to get to issue the ticket for the last two months. I was specifically trying to avoid having to wait until the last week or two to get the ticket so I started really early. He assured me I was confirmed and so I asked him to issue the ticket. Now it turns out that I'm not confirmed and I'm waiting for seats to open up. Forget it.
It has been a busy week this last week. With Agus gone it has seemed like everything that can break has broken. It now seems like I've fixed most of it but I'm getting pretty exhausted. I have interviewed several people about filling in for Agus and it looks like we have some good choices. Hopefully in the next week or so we can make a decision. For now, I'm going to go fix something.
